Armella’s Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer Journey

Armella is a wonderful, loving, and thoughtful 16 year old girl. This summer she was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma Cancer.

Armella, a 16-year-old high school junior has been diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma. This is a cancer that starts in white blood cells called lymphocytes. Lymphocytes are part of the body’s immune system.

Armella was looking forward to starting her first job at Scheels All Sport but in May she felt a swollen lymph node in her neck. It went down and shortly after she had 3 more swollen nodes. Armella went to her doctor and he put her on an antibiotic and said she should follow up in two weeks. She had blood work done and the results came back that she was low on iron. In early June Armella was checked for mono and the results were negative. She was referred to an ear, nose and throat (ENT) doctor in late June. She had a CT scan in late July and Armella was told she had swollen nodes down into her chest and one of the lymph nodes would have to be removed for biopsy. On August 1, Armella had surgery to remove a lymph node and on August 4 the doctor called with the result of Hodgkin Lymphoma. The family met with the Oncologist and Armella was told she would have to have chemo. Her days prior chemo starts will be filled with a pulmonary test, PET scan, and echo plus appointments with her doctors. Armella will visit a pediatric oncologist in Madison for a second opinion. For the chemo she will have a port inserted under her skin. An appointment with an OB/GYN will be to discuss fertility preservation and her PET scan results will determine if she will require a bone marrow biopsy.

Armella is a sweet, good-hearted, active 16 year old. She loves school and is looking forward to Homecoming and Prom this year. She enjoys roller blading, swimming, biking, camping and hanging out with her friends. Armella’s current pets are her cats Bear and Dragon. She is the strongest, bravest person I know and is a role model for me. I have always admired her and she continues to amaze me at how tough she really is.

Thank you for taking the time to read Armella’s story. Please keep her in your thoughts and prayers. I will keep you updated as appointments happen and we get results. Thank you again.

September 13, 2017 - First cycle complete

Hello friends and family! Just wanted to give you a quick update. Armella had her last chemo treatment of the first cycle today, so that was pretty exciting. (One cycle Down!) She did very good and even got some homework done during her treatment. She did start losing some hair this week and was a little sad about that, but still very positive. She gets a couple weeks off now and starts her 2nd cycle September 25th. Thanks again for all of your support! Please Share.
